About Elliot[]
Officer Elliot Novak was a police officer with the Phoenix, Arizona Police Department. He meets and immediately falls in love with Vera Louise Gorman when he had her arrested and ticketed for jaywalking. (Their first anniversary was a re-enactment of their first meeting, Vera jaywalking and Elliott ticketing her for jaywalking)
Their courtship, although brief, was instant love; and they made arrangements to get married. Although Elliot was in love with Vera, their road to the altar was almost derailed by Mel wanting to try to make him into a chauvinist like he could be. That plan was stopped firmly by Vera's friends, Jolene and Alice, who sharply chastised Mel for his stupidity.
After the wedding, Elliot and Vera settled down to domestic bliss, although at various times, Vera's former landlady, Debbie Walden (also played by Linda Lavin) and the often forgetful pastor who had married them in the first place, both moved into their house and took over.
When the series ended, Elliot was promoted to detective, and with the upcoming birth of his and Vera's first child, Vera then quit work and became a stay-at-home mother, which allowed Elliot to become the only breadwinner for the family.
